Summer Solstice Practices and Rituals

Sunday, June 21st, is the Summer Solstice. This is the day with the longest amount of sunlight all year long, and with that exceptional feat comes a gorgeous energy. Also known as Litha, this day is one where we celebrate the sun and its ability to bring illumination, abundance, and time of growth. That makes it  a potent time for transformation, motivation, and creative flow, all of which you can tap into with ease when you know the right practices, tools, and rituals! Let’s break down some ways you can celebrate the longest day of the year!

Associations & Correspondences

Regardless of what you are planning to do with the energy of the Summer Solstice, there are some fun connections that will easily allow you to tap into the flow, fun, and abundant energy of the Solstice.

Color: Yellow, Orange, Gold, Red, Bright Blue - To incorporate try dressing in the colors, using candles in these colors, adding flowers to your home with these colors, eating foods of these colors

Plants: Lemons, Lemon Balm, St. Johns Wart, Lavender, Mint, Calendula - Try incorporating these into teas, burning blends, incense, or even decorations for your home

Element: Fire - Use fire and flames to connect to the energy of the sun, think candles, bonfires, etc.

Symbols: Sun, Bonfire, Oak Trees

Practices

Clearing Energy

If you plan on doing any kind of ritual, it is important to clear your space before you begin. This helps you to release any energy from the day like frustration, anxiety, sadness etc that might make it harder for you to relax into the ritual itself. It also helps to clear any lingering energy in your home to provide you a clear slate. You can clear with smoke from herbs or incense, with an energy or aura clearing spray, sound, or even walking around the space with Selenite. The Solstice has this bright and vibrant energy, and if you are trying to bring some of that sunshine into your home, ask specifically to welcome it in when you are resetting your space.

Sunrise or Sunset Movement

The Summer Solstice is kind of all about the sun, so if you are wanting to connect, try and catch the sunrise or sunset. You don’t have to do any form of movement, but it is a powerful way to release and let go of stagnant and stuck energy. Try going for a walk, doing some yoga, or even bike out in the sun to give yourself some extra energy.

Create Flower Wreath or Flower Crowns

What better of a way to connect into the energy of Summer than crafting with beautiful flowers. You can definitely also celebrate with a beautiful bunch of flowers, but there is something extra whimsical and magical about adorning yourself or your home with your wreath. Any colors that you are drawn to are perfect, but here’s a little list to help you choose what works best for you.

Red Flowers - are connected to the Fire element: These flowers can help boost passion and motivation.

Yellow Flowers - are connected to the Earth element: Helping to promote stability, feeling grounded, and happiness.

Pink Flowers - are connected to the Love element: Known to attract romance, nurturing energy, and emotional harmony.

White Flowers - are connected to the Metal element: Representing purity, focus, and clarity.

Purple & Blue Flowers - are connected to the Wood/Water element: Can help boost creativity and prosperity.

Charge Your Crystals in the Sun

While you may have heard of charging and clearing your crystals in the moonlight, you can also do this in the sun. The Sun helps to infuse the crystals with activating, energizing, and motivating energy. This is perfect for helping you to connect to solar energy and activate the energy to create change in your external life. Be wary of leaving crystals that are super soft or ones that you suspect are dyed/color enhanced in the song for too long. It can color bleach or damage them.

Rituals

Burn and Release

All you need is a piece of paper, something to write with, a lighter, and a place to burn something (in a cauldron, metal bowl, outside etc).

  • Step One

I always recommend clearing the energy in your space before doing type of energy clearing or releasing.

  • Step Two

Write out what it is that you want to release. It can be how you feel about a certain situation, a person, an experience, a thought or belief, actions etc. The important part is making sure that you are sure that you want it out of your life. You may find that energy will remain if there is a part of you that still feels like you want or need it. Feel free to list out things, write full sentences, or even randomly place the words around the page. Trust your intuition and what you feel called to do.

  • Step Three

Take a moment to pull the image or feeling of what you are trying to release to your mind. Once it is there, light your piece of paper on fire. Feel free to place it in your vessel or on the ground if you are worried about it burning quickly. As it burns and creates smoke, imagine what you are wanting to release, catching fire and turning to ash as it parts ways with you and your energy.

Setting up your Altar for Summer

Creating an altar is a personal and creative way to bring in the energy of the Summer Solstice to your home. This can be personal to what you feel called to, but I always recommend looking up at the correspondences from above to see what you are drawn to. Set up an offering of flowers in the colors of the solstice, while on a nature walk find natural treasures to add to your altar, or even set up a new manifestation bowl to call in what you want. You can even add things like books, personal items, or photographs and art that connect to your own personal intentions for the Solstice.

Manifestation Bowl

Creating a physical representation of what it is you are trying to manifest is a very helpful way to set and keep that intention. Manifestation Bowls can contain a variety of different items that connect to what you are trying to manifest. This is a whole blog we have on how to set up one for Abundance Manifestation! The Summer Solstice is a time of abundance; whether you are looking at the amount of sunlight we have, the fruits, vegetables, and flowers that fill the fields, and even the energy we have. Allow yourself to tap into this so that you are able to carry it across many different aspects of your life.

Connecting to the Elements

The Summer Solstice is a beautiful day to spend time outside. If you are looking at narrowing in on what you want out of life, but you feel like you don’t know how to get there, take some time and reconnect to nature. The elements like water, fire, earth, and air can not only affect and transform our energy, but they can hold energetic space for us. Try to interact with those four main elements this Solstice and see what you feel in the silence.

Whichever way you choose to spend your Summer Solstice, I hope you let yourself take time to connect to each and every moment you can. The presence of mind and body is what allows us to fully experience and take in our life (regardless of whether you are doing something witchy or spiritual).
