How to Create Your Own Spelled Intention Candle

4 min read

When getting in touch with your witchy side, connecting to the elements is an incredibly powerful practice to add to your tool box. Different elements can support you in different ways. Water helps you to add flow into your life, Earth can helped you find steadiness, Air brings in new energy, and Fire helps you to take swift action.

This candle is your connection to fire, and works as an incredible aid for activating, releasing, and charging a specific intention or desire. So let's talk about the key components for creating your own intention or spelled candle, so you can craft your own it in the future! (If you're looking for a kit with this and a whole bunch of other Practical Magic tools and rituals, check out our Fall Self Care Box!)

A plain white pillar spell candle

Components Needed:

Candle: White candles are an incredible base to work with because they can act as a representative of you, your new beginning, or the intention you are working towards. However, as you work with this practice more and more you can choose to work with different colors to best suit your needs. A black candle can aid in banishment and protection, a red candle will bring energy, passion, and attraction to a spell. Pink Candles work well for self love, romance, and compassion spells, while Green can help with abundance, money, and health. You can also get a wide variety of sizes and shapes, so if you would like to do a lot of carving or intricate details, larger ones work better.

Oil: This can be any oil you would like, as it is here to help adhere any herbs to the candle. If you would like to add extra intention into the candle you can use an essential oil, otherwise a simple cooking oil would work as well. You want to use a very small amount of oil, just enough to help the herbs stick.

Carving Tool/Tooth Pick/Old Pen: You can use whatever you would like for this step, but this will help you carve any words, symbols, or sigils into the candle to help connect your intention.

Herbs: You can choose any type of herb you would like for your candle. In this box, we've included a few of our favorite staples for abundance, self love, protection and energy. Below is a list of correspondences that align with different herbs, spices, flowers, and resins, most of which you probably have in your kitchen right now!

Mortar & Pestle: When you are creating a mix to dress your candle, it's very helpful to have the items finely ground so it can stick to the outside of the candle evenly. The mortar and pestle is great for grining and mixing everything together.

How to Make Your Intention Candle

First begin by setting your intention. We have a meditation dedicated to this within this course that will help you understand what you need and even how you can phrase it. This candle is made to be blown out and re-lit whenever you want to refocus or work on this intention, so allow yourself to think of a desire or goal that may take a while to manifest or focus to bring into the world.

Next, pick out your herbs. You can use your pendulum to help you decide or reference the list from above. The quantities, can vary, but you typically won't need a lot, especially after you grind and mix things together in the mortar and pestle. The next step is to do exactly that! As you are adding your herbs to the mortar and pestle, think back to why you are adding them and as you place them in think of how they will support your intention. Once all your ingredients are in, grind them together to make the dressing for your candle!

We are now on to carving! This can truly be done by anything sharp, but my favorite tool is a pen or pencil. It's easy to write with them and they're not so sharp that you could hurt yourself. There are so many things you can carve into the candle, one of my favorites is words. It can be an essential word in your intention (ie: Self Love for an intention about loving and caring for yourself) or something you want to call in. It can also be a symbol like a heart, horseshoe, dollar sign, anything that you use as a signifier for your intention. You can also make a sigil (there are truly so many ways online to do this) and use that to represent your intention.

From here you can rub oil on your candle (remember not too much), and press the herbs into the candle. I recommend letting it dry for a bit before lighting it. Remember to always use proper safety when lighting any kind of intention candle. Burn it on a metal or ceramic plate/tray and have salt/a cover near by to put out anything just in case!

I recommend lighting/using it when you are doing work related to that intention. Looking to bring in more financial abundance? Light the candle when you're doing bills or maybe while you're at work.
