Breaking down Barbault's Basket: Explaining what it is and what we can expect

If you have been on the astrological side of the Internet lately then you have absolutely heard of Barbault’s Basket. Barbault’s Basket is a prediction made by French astrologer, Andre Barbault (the last one before he died in 2019) that anticipated a massive perspective shift on a global and humanity wide level. Now this placement or astrological event is not something that is going to impact you nased on your rising like with lunar or other planetary cycles. It is going to be a wider spread global shift, that acts as an opening for new possibilities coming. So let’s break it down and how it might impact larger things in our society. 

Andre Barbault was someone who studied planetary transits and spent much of his life doing predictive astrology with a heavy focus on these outer planets. Something that is important to know about him is that he predicted a lot of massive world events throughout his career. He predicted the fall of the Soviet Union in 1955, as well as a world wide pandemic in 2020. His track record is what has so many people interested in what he said about this final prediction. Barbault saw this configuration of outer planets as the beginning of a new reorganization of the world. Now if you look online, so many people have been looking towards this as this sudden shift to a utopia. That’s not how astrology works and that’s not really even what Barbault predicted. This basket is only in the sky for a very short period of time (peaking on July 20th), so we need to view this as the beginning of massive, longer lasting attitude and perspective shifts on a wide scale. There is a lot more nuance happening, which when we read everything together points to this event being a turning point for a lot of hot bed issues that we are struggling with. 

Astrology is like the weather. We can feel its effects whether we believe in it or not. However they are not predictors of immediate change. Astrology opens up energetic portals during specific times of the year (or during specific times in our lifetime) in which we are able to reflect and make change more easily. This is one of those times, and the larger structures and beliefs surrounding ideas of community, individualism, technology, ideology, power, and human rights. All quite lofty ideas, but ones that affect each and every person living on this planet. While there isn’t a clear road map to how this might turn out, we can look at the major players of this basket and reflect on where new ideas are flowing. 

Pluto

Pluto stationed in Aquarius in the beginning of 2024. Pluto is the planet of transformation, rebirth, power, and the subconscious, it is also the slowest moving planet (on account of it being so far from the sun) and the one that defines generations. Pluto acts as an indicator of where the values of an era lie and what outdated values need to be addressed and most likely uprooted and replaced. When Pluto was stationed in Capricorn, there was a focus on the way people worked and how they made money. Gone was the idea of a “Company Man”, in which you found a job or company and stayed within those ranks until you retired. Entrepreneurship, side gigs, increases in minimum wage, flexibility/ownership of personal time, and personal brands came in and became the new normal. With Pluto in Aquarius, we are examining and focusing on the idea of community, humanity, and authority from a worldwide perspective. While we are still very early in this transit, many shifts and shake ups have already happened. The key with Pluto in Aquarius is that it’s not about forming one unit of people doing the same thing in the same way to support a community, it’s about acknowledging the unique traits and qualities that we all have. It’s about those very traits and skills being seen, celebrated, and used to support your own community. It asks the question of where has our desire for uniformity or consistency stopped us from progressing.  

Jupiter

Jupiter very recently (June 30th) entered Leo, and its transit is the one that pulls the whole “basket” together. It’s also the planet that makes the transit so short (only a few weeks long in total). Jupiter is the planet of success, luck, optimism, and expansion. Last year, Jupiter lived in the sign of Cancer. This caused a lot of internal internal growth to happen, and the moments of good luck and success were connected internal growth as well as leaps in intuition. With its transit in Leo it opens up possibilities and good fortune in the areas of creativity, personal expression, and big choices. It also shifts the energy from inward to outward, making the wins that we have during this time much more visible. During Barbault’s Basket, Jupiter is in opposition to Pluto. This opens up questions around the way we show up for and in our communities, and the conflict between the two asks us to examine the status quo and if we still want to follow it. 

Neptune

Neptune rules spirituality, beliefs, and inspiration. It guides the heart of what our society as a collective cares about. When it was previously in Pisces, we saw a huge rise of people being interested in creativity, imagination, and mystical spirituality. Think of the increased interest in crystals, tarot, witchcraft, reiki, and energy healing that we saw emerge from 2011-2025. It was also a time of feeling frozen with indecision and trusting too easily. Neptune in Aries has WILDLY different energy. While still pertaining to spirituality, it’s all about action and doing. Where you once may have felt settled with imagining what could happen, but now is the time to do all those big dreams. With Neptune retrograding currently, our energy is turning towards inner reflection, making us question if we are happy, where we need to work with our own spirituality, and how we want to interact with the world. All of which contribute to this desire to disrupt the old and bring in new possibilities, and have the energy and passion to do it. 

Uranus

The last planet that we need to talk about is Uranus, which is currently stationed in Gemini. Uranus rules freedom, innovation, rebellion, individuality, and random luck. Previously Uranus resided in Taurus. This meant a lot of unexpected energy, upheaval, and surprises with money and the possessions we have. This transit occurred from 2018 all the way until May of 2026, and based on that description, it is easy to see why it may have been a more challenging placement. Instability with finances is incredibly destabilizing, and can often make people feel frozen. Since it has moved into Gemini, it has brought the focus to technology, communication, and socialization, and most importantly things have sped up. This new, fast paced energy of Gemini, paired with an openness for new ideas and possibilities creates possibilities for new outlooks on a wide, social scale.

On the whole, we don’t really know how this specific combination of planetary trines and sextiles will affect us, and we probably won’t know for a few years at the earliest. Because these are “outer planets” their effects have huge rippling changes societally, but take a long time for us to see show up directly in our lives.
